Curriculum for Excellence (CFE)

E-mail Print PDF

Have you seen the recent article on the new Curriculum for Excellence (CFE)?

Read it here on bbc.co.uk

We fully support Just Trading Scotland in their push for fair trade to be included into the school curriculum. We are at a point in time where it is crucial for pupils to understand their role as a world citizen, and reflect on how their actions as consumers have an impact on the lives of others.

The new Curriculum for Excellence allows the flexibility for fair trade to be addressed in many ways and in multiple classes. This is why the One World Shop is currently working hard to support teachers and schools with a variety of services and the expertise of two qualified schools teachers. We want to improve pupils understanding that ethical trading can help to reduce poverty and injustices, and to encourage them to engage with fair trade by learning about the lives of producers in developing countries.

Please take a look at our Fair Trade Schools page for more information on how we could help your school to learn more about fair trade or contact us directly.

Pakistan Floods Appeal

E-mail Print PDF
Over 1,000 people are reported to have died with that number likely to rise as more information becomes available. About 2.5 million people are believed to have been affected by the floods which may worsen as further rain falls and water moves downstream. In the aftermath of the floods there is a serious risk to survivors from potentially deadly diseases which will spread as a result of contaminated surface and drinking water.

The money raised will help fund the life saving work in Pakistan of the DEC’s Members and their partners; and support the efforts in Pakistan of the DEC’s members which are the leading UK aid agencies.

Click the banner to donate online or check out dec.org.uk for more information.

India Independence Day - 15th August

E-mail Print PDF

Celebrate over 40 years of fair trade and independence for India!

We will be joining in with the celebrations in the Glasgow shop on the 15th of August.  Join us to enjoy some Indian music and sample some Indian Tea. All our customers can receive a free recycled newspaper bag to fill with Indian products at 5% discount!

India Independence Day marks India’s independence from British rule. To honour our workers' right to not work on national holidays we are going to have our own celebrations here in the Glasgow shop. Over 50 producer organisations in India have been supplying the European market with fair trade products over the last 40 years, this has made a massive difference to the lives of many producers.

paper-bagThis eco-friendly product is made from recycled Indian newspaper. The organisation was started in 2004 by street children who wanted to give something back in return for the opportunities which had allowed them to escape desperate circumstances. These elder children, now married with children of their own, generate an income by making newspaper bags and jute items. This allows them to take care of thirteen street children that they have saved from the streets surrounding Delhi train station. Support for this wonderful project means that these children can enjoy going to school and playing, rather than pulling rickshaws, shoe polishing, rag picking and worse. The newspapers are collected by bicycle rickshaw calling at residential homes for any read newspapers. This is why sometimes your bag will have a completed crossword!
