Many young people who volunteer with us have found an inspiring place that encourages them to see beyond their own circumstances and to help disadvantaged people across the world and have gained useful skills and valuable work experience to put on their CV which has helped them gain permanent paid employment.

Many of our older volunteers have retired, and with families grown up so coming to the shop provides a new social outlet as well as contributing to society as a whole.

Our volunteers tell us that working in the shop helps provide them with a good social life and is a great reason to get out of the house.

Some of the work volunteers can do include:

  • Serving customers in the shop
  • Unpacking and pricing deliveries
  • Stocking the shop, display work
  • Stockroom work, packing stalls

We require excellent customer service skills and a high attention to detail and previous retail experience is not needed as we will provide full training. Click here to download the application form or contact us here.

Margot Hudson and the Lord Provost

Pictured is our volunteer Margot Hudson being awarded the Inspiring Volunteering Achievement Award 2013 from the Lord Provost of Edinburgh. Margot is a Shop Volunteer and was for many years, Chair of Management Committee for One World Shop. She helped get the One World Shop off the ground and she was a key player in the early days of its existence. Without Margot, the One World Shop would be a lesser place and would not have the strong, happy and committed team that exists today. It is her personal example and amazing commitment to us that we are so grateful for.

Volunteering at the One World Shop was an inspiring experience and has encouraged me to rethink my worth and value contributing the world as a fairer place to live and work for all of us. My time was enriched with moments of great fun as the small shop became 'my world' in Edinburgh with its atmosphere filled with exotic scents, sounds and friendly smiles
