One World Shop

  • Reopening Plans!

We are thrilled to announce we are reopening One World Shop from Monday 29th June in line with the government advice.

The shop will be open Monday - Saturday 10am - 5:30pm with a limitation on the number of staff, volunteers and customers in the shop, a one way system and sanitisation areas.

We are asking all customers to wear a mask inside the shop if possible (obviously not everyone is able to and we understand that), and handle goods as little as possible.

We're taking the time this week to prepare the shop, make sure our perspex screens at the till are working effectively and trying to make the space as safe as possible for everyone.

Thank you to everyone that has supported us by buying products from us online during the time we've been closed!

While I have your attention, please take a moment to check out the Scottish Fair Trade Forum's crowdfunder to help support Scotland's fair trade shops and their suppliers:

There are only a few days left to get involved and they're only half way to their target!

  • The time has come for us to close to the public

However, we will reopen - this isn't the end!

As of this morning, the shop will be closed, but we have some good news:

Orders can still be placed online for now, and I will be travelling to the shop once or twice a week to process and send them out to you.

If you live locally (within "The City of Edinburgh") we're happy to deliver orders to you by car. Email your order with your address and a contact number, and we'll be in touch to sort payment and a delivery date. Alternatively, if you place your order online under Click & Collect, we will be in touch to drop it off to you.

As we won't be in the shop most of the time, please avoid calling us and use email instead. Use or just hit reply on this newsletter.

You can email your phone number and we can call you back if you prefer to discuss by phone.

For urgent enquiries, please call Rachel on 07715486676

We will be running a sale on a big chunk of our food and drink products. We don't want them to go to waste! I'll send out details of this in the next few days once it's up and running.

If you want to support us without spending money, you can leave us a review on our Google Business page.

This helps our ratings, and increases our chance of finding new customers. It only takes 2 minutes, and you can even just leave a five star rating if you don't have anything nice to say about us!

If you've taken photos of your purchases or the shop itself, we'd love to see them - you can upload them to the business page while you're there.

Thanks for all that you all do for fair trade! We couldn't do this without you.
Hopefully, we'll see you back in the shop soon!

  • How Covid-19 is affecting One World Shop

    Dear friends and customers!

Like many other small businesses, we are staying open for the moment, but taking extra care to keep our staff, volunteers and customers clean and safe.

Cleaning in our shop has intensified with particular care taken at our till area, card machine and door handles at frequent intervals throughout the day. Our staff and volunteers are required to wash their hands regularly and will not come into work if experiencing any symptoms at all.

We are preparing ourselves for a quiet time and we understand it's unavoidable but we plan to keep stocked up with all our regular items.

Please note, if you can’t come into the shop, you can get anything we stock delivered directly to your home. If it's not on our website, just email or give us a call on 0131 229 4541 and we can arrange it. Don't come in if you don't have to!

We still want you to celebrate Easter! Why not plan ahead and order your Easter eggs in now and we’ll post them out to you? Just check our Easter page on our website, choose your eggs and purchase them or give us a call and pay over the phone.

  • Little Sun Solar Lamp Offer

As part of our strategic product development plan, we're excited to be bringing a new product to One World Shop. The Little Sun solar lamp is not just a great product, it does something extra special too.

The Little Sun is a solar powered, lightweight lamp that can be hung up or worn on a lanyard, and creates a dimmable light that is bright enough to read or use for working in the dark.

When you purchase a Little Sun solar lamp, another one is made available at a locally affordable price to someone who very much needs it. Mainly in sub-saharan Africa, local entrepreneurs are given work to help distribute the lamps and help bring the power of the sun to everyone.

This simple, easy to use device is great for all ages - there's only one button to operate. It makes a great nightlight for kids, perfect for camping or in the garden. The Little Sun only takes 5 hours to charge, just leave it in the window with the panel on show!

The Little Sun Solar Lamp will be available to buy from One World Shop in the run up to Christmas 2019. In the meantime, if you'd like to register your interest to preorder, or find out more, please fill out your details on this page:

By registering to preorder, you save £5 off the full price of £30. No payment is required until we have ordered the Little Sun solar lamps, we will let you know when that is after you've signed up! We think these will be extremely popular for Christmas - so preorder to avoid disappointment.

  • Fairtrade Fortnight 2019

We take these two weeks every year to run events, encourage schools, churches and organisations to do something to promote both Fairtrade and "fairly traded" goods. But what does that all mean?

Fairtrade is the waving person logo that appears on many products that you'll see on biscuits, coffee, t-shirts - it's the Official Mark that is used to (unofficially) say "This product has been created in a sustainable way that has provided the person or group that made it with a fair wage, and safe working conditions. They have also received a financial premium that gives them the opportunity to decide how to improve their community."

They work directly with farmers, co-operatives and producer groups, but also lobby governments and work with existing organisations to improve their own products to be more fair.

Fairtrade Fortnight is a great opportunity to talk about how Fairtrade really makes a difference to people's lives, and we usually get to meet some of the farmers and producers too!

Our friends at the Scottish Fair Trade Forum will be bringing a special guest along to our shop for a small event, which everyone is invited to.

Aimable Nshimiye, a Rwandan coffee farmer from Abateraninkunga Ba Sholi co-operative, will be visiting Edinburgh on Tuesday 5th March from 6-8pm.

Please join us in One World Shop to meet Aimable for a Q&A and free refreshments.

    Other Events

    Put on your own event

If you'd like to run your own fair trade event, whether in your organisation or even just a pop-up shop in your home, get in touch. We have a huge range of goods available on Sale or Return or discounted for resale.

Give us a call, email or pop into the shop to talk to us about how we can work together to promote fair trade!

  • A very Merry Christmas

What a year we have had!

On behalf of the staff, the volunteers and the management committee - thank you for your incredible support this year, and in turn what you've enabled us to do for the brilliant artisans, farmers and producers that make our products.

We're already getting ready for the next few months, Veganuary, Fairtrade Fortnight and eventually Easter; and we have a special announcement to make so watch this space.

The office will be closed from Christmas Eve - 3rd of January, but not back to full staffing until the 14th of January.

Please have a peaceful and lovely fairtrade Christmas, and we'll see you all in the New Year

    Lorna, Rachel, and Emily

  • Daughters of the Ganges

We have just received a delivery of some beautifully designed jewellery from Daughters of the Ganges. They aim to uplift and empower disadvantaged women across India by creating opportunities for them to earn fair wages and lead dignified lives through financial independence. All products handcrafted by Daughters of the Ganges are sourced from small artisan communities.

The company provides raw materials and equipment to women who cannot leave their homes to go to work or lack sufficient resources. This wonderful organisation not only supports its artisan creators but also their children, providing them with after-school programs in an effort to provide them with a successful future. Daughters of the Ganges is a partner of CFM Market Linkages, a WFTO certified organisation.

This range is available to buy in our Edinburgh shop and online.

  • Vacancy: Retail Manager

Do you know something about palm oil, or why loose leaf tea is becoming popular again? One World Shop needs an enthusiastic retail manager to join our tiny team. We're not looking for an expert, but we like our staff to be able to keep up with our knowledgeable customers.

The last few years have seen a lot of change in the way the shop is run and we need someone to direct the retail side of the organisation into the next phase or our plans. Excellent selling skills are a necessity in this role, so bring your A-game.

Must enjoy coaching a lovely group of volunteers, creating a magical shop interior and drinking fair trade coffee (or tea)!
