  • Schools celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight

    It’s Fairtrade Fortnight!
    29th Feb – 13th March 2016

Sit down for breakfast, stand up for farmers!

As Martin Luther King famously said, "Before you finish eating breakfast in the morning, you've depended on more than half the world". Despite our dependence on farmers and workers for the foods, drinks and products that we love, about 795 million people are undernourished globally.

Here at our new shop location, we’re getting really excited about all the activities coming up for Fairtrade Fortnight this year. The theme highlights our dependence on farmers and workers across the world and why it’s high time they were treated with respect and fairness.

We’re delighted to let you know what we’re offering schools and nurseries this year and share some of our ideas on what you can do in your school to make this Fairtrade Fortnight really successful.

What do you put on your toast in the morning??

  • Launch Party

You are all welcome to join us for the One World Shop launch party on Saturday 28th November at 11am. The party will be held in the shop at 25 Nicolson Square.
Access is from outside the City of Edinburgh Methodist Church Hall, just down the stairs; via the lift in the Well Cafe or ramp access at the back of the building.

This is a family friendly party with free refreshments and hopefully a few (unconfirmed) performers, as well as a visit from the Lord Provost. We will give you an update on our fundraising so far, and what our plans are for the next year.

We would also love to take this opportunity to thank every single person who has helped us with the move, fundraising, and who have just generally supported us throughout the time One World Shop has existed.

Please RSVP to Lorna (lorna@oneworldshop.co.uk) or join the event on Facebook. This is a free, non-ticketed event.

It has been nice to see so many new and familiar faces in the shop. We will be having an opening party at the end of the month - the date will be fixed as of next week!

Remember, our Crowdfunder Project is still running and we're spending lots of money on the new shop. If you can help out, please donate what you can.

  • The Move (Day 3 Update)

It's been a very busy and tiring few days since we began moving the shop, but the excitement of what is becoming our new home is keeping us all bright and enthusiastic! We're, so far (touch wood) on track to be ready to open on Monday 12th October. Here's a quick update of what's happened so far.

    DSC_0242

Friday was Rachel, Lorna and John's last day working in the shop at St John's. As you can see - full of eagerness to get packing.

The Sunday packing team outside the St John's shop

Sunday was full-on packing up and dismantling furniture - we had a super team to help out. Thank you everyone that came along to help.

Lots and lots of boxes! The shop contents packed up all the way to the ceiling, the interior was beginning to look very strange.

    An empty stock room

A very empty but fire-safe stock room. Our new stock room is a lot smaller so we haven't been able to take some of our old shelving.

    Exhausted John

John trying not to fall asleep.

Monday began with BT arriving to hook up the phones, and then this beast of a removals van arrived at Nicolson Square with the contents of the stock room.

    IMG_0031

By the end of day two, we had the shop layout beginning to appear and a stock room beginning to take shape.
    IMG_0034 IMG_0036

Tuesday, Day 3 we had the rest of the shop furniture arrive, and ALL of the shop stock piled up into the middle of the room. The office is networked and almost complete. Lots of photos to follow! We've ordered some new signage to direct you all to the new shop once we're ready to open.

  • Nicolson Square update

A little update for you to quell your curiosity! We have some photos of the new shop at Nicolson Square. We are so in love with the new floor, and our hard working builders have discovered some beautiful wooden pillars underneath layers of paint and paper.

There is obviously still some work to do - got to clean and fix up those lights, put doors back on once they're painted and start making decisions on where the shelving will go on Monday when it's dropped off by our removal team. Through the doors on the far left, the shop can be accessed from the Well Café via the lift - so once the corridor is cleared out a bit the shop will be super accessible for buggies, wheelchairs and those unable to manage the stairs out the front.

    28-09-15_2

Despite the shop being in the basement, there is a bright side - literally. We're planning to have our till area next to the window on the right, and the main entrance is just out of shot on the right next to the lights.

Let us know what you think on our Facebook, Google+ and Twitter accounts!

  • One World Shop Moving Dates

The building work has started and our final preparations are being made to move out of St John’s Church at the beginning of October 2015. We have started to clear out some older stock to make space for a fresh start in our new premises which will (hopefully) be open on Monday 12th October!

Our last day of trading here at St John's is Saturday 3rd October, so please visit us before then if you’re looking for a quick bargain in our sale!

We will be hosting our annual Stallholders Christmas Preview on Wednesday 23rd September (at the St John’s site) from 2 – 7pm. If you are interested in running a One World Shop stall this Christmas, please feel free to drop in for a chat. Everyone is welcome, even if you haven’t run a stall before; we can give you some advice and top tips from the experts.

Between the 3rd and 12th we will be doing a lot of packing up and moving stock and furniture, painting and organising the new premises. If you are able to help in any way, please let us know by sending a message or visiting the shop before these dates to let us know.

  • Festival Marquee - First Weekend

The Festival Marquee is now in full swing! We’ve had a great first weekend, which included the Vegan Festival at the Roxburghe Hotel. We had some great weather which resulted in a very busy few days at the shop.

Fair & Ethical Trade on the Fringe

We'll also be making an appearance at the Fair & Ethical Trade on the Fringe - visit us on Castle Street between Sunday 16th August - Saturday 22nd August.

We have lots of brand new products available to buy in our tent and shop. Shortly available online too.

    Seedpod animals

Funny little seedpod animals from Zimbabwe, made using re-used, recycled and sustainable sources.

    Dalit Spices

Glass jars of spices, fragrant handmade soaps and claypot candles from Dalit Goods, an organisation that does a lot of work transforming lives of some of the poorest, lowest caste people in India. They run a school, orphanage and find foster homes for children as well as providing fairly paid work and dignity for people who might otherwise be left to beg in the streets.

    Lamps

Beautiful flower lamps from Thailand are handcrafted by villagers, made with real leaves and flowers and sustainable wood.

Free samples of Eswatini Jams & Chutneys in the Marquee

There is free sampling in the festival marquee every day, so come along to try some of the flavours of Swaziland. Currently we’re sampling Tomato & Chilli Chutney and Mango Jam - both very delicious and fruity! Thank you to JTS for the freebies.

    JTS Tasting

The Festival Marquee is open every day from 11am - 5:30pm right outside the shop!

    Edinburgh Vegan Festival

The Vegan festival was incredibly busy, we had a great time meeting lots of new people and selling lots of chocolate. Unsurprisingly, we sold out of Vego bars, and sold lots of Divine Chocolate, especially the Dark Chocolate with Raspberry and Dark Chocolate with Mango & Coconut which we were giving out samples of. Thanks to the Vegan Festival for inviting us, we hope there will be another one next year.

If you’re looking for products suitable for vegans on our online shop, just choose “Vegan” from the filter to make things a bit easier for yourself.

  • Announcement: New Premises

We are very pleased to announce that we have now signed the lease for a new premises! As of October 2015* the One World Shop will be moving to ...

    City of Edinburgh Methodist Church

    DSC_0113._web

    *date to be confirmed

The City of Edinburgh Methodist Church is nestled in the corner of Nicolson Square, just off Nicolson Street which has great bus routes and easily accessed by car or on foot from all directions. In May 2014, they completed a £2.5 million refurbishment project to make the church more accessible, create a new café and outdoor terrace area, renovated meeting rooms and the auditorium and establish itself as a thriving Edinburgh Fringe venue.

    The Well Cafe

Before the renovations, the cafe was located in the basement of the church. The large space will be split in two, so that it can be shared between ourselves and The Dream Factory. The Dream Factory is a new hub for creativity and enterprise. It includes small business incubation, and Hope’s Garden is the pioneering business for the project.

We will also make use of what was the kitchen for storage, a small chapel as the office and the corridor leading into the space from the front of the building. The new shop is accessed at the front, down a few steps via the car park, but there is also access for those unable to manage the steps by the lift accessed from the cafe or deliveries via the back of the building down a ramp (not pictured).

Looking back towards the door, the kitchen hatch and entrance into the store room
From the side of the hatch, door past the right side of the image
The chapel - to become our office

We're really looking forward to connecting with lots of new organisations and businesses in the new location. Edinburgh University, the Mosque and Festival Theatre will hopefully bring in many new customers for us.

The space that we're moving into wasn't included in the existing refurbishment, but some
work is still on-going in the basement rooms. A wall will be built to divide up the main room, we also need to install ventilation for the storage space and new doors will need to be fitted. Once we've completed the main building works, new flooring, decorating and shop fit-out will need to begin as well as creating a store room and office - so, there's a lot of work to do!

Currently, we've raised about £5,000 from various fundraising activities in the 15 months, but we need to seriously step up our game if we are going to have a shop that looks as great as the products it will be flaunting.

Once we have some good design plans down, we will have a better idea of what our specific expenses are going to be. We're planning a few more fundraising events, but we're relying on help from our friends and members with ideas and planning. Please get in touch if you have a fundraising idea, or an event that proceeds could be donated to us from.
