Rachel Farey reports:
It’s already been an exciting start to Fairtrade Fortnight at the One World Shop. On Saturday I met up with the wonderfully engaging Pamela L’Intelligent, a seamstress from Craft Aid Mauritius who arrived in Edinburgh for the start of her whistle-stop tour around Scotland. Pamela makes school uniforms and will be visiting schools, faith groups and campaigning groups as a guest of Scottish Fair Trade Forum and Edinburgh Fairtrade City Group to talk about her experiences working in a factory as a child and how they would be hidden in baskets when the inspectors visited and explain just how working for a Fair Trade organisation has changed her life around.
Craft Aid also provides the wide range of sugar we sell at the shop and deliver to our business customers; demerara, raw cane, muscovado and caster sugar. Pamela and Gabriel Kumudu, the Director of Craftaid, will be speaking at the One World Shop for our event “Sugar! Sugar!” on Sunday 1st March at 2.30pm, so do come along and enjoy some tea and cake and listen to their extraordinary journey.
This week I will be travelling about giving lots of talks on Fair Trade to schools and other groups and delivering lots of stalls to churches and schools in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Please contact us if you would like to run your own Fair Trade stall either during Fairtrade Fortnight or any other time.
On Saturday 28th Feb we will be running a stall at the Fair Trade Festival event at the Main Hall in Summerhall in Edinburgh, a family-friendly event with free refreshments, storytelling, stalls, music from Edinburgh Contemporary Choir, do come along.
