This great chunky train made up with building blocks is brightly coloured and can be pushed along for hours by children - so there's no need for batteries, just plenty of imagination! There's also lots of fun to be had stacking and sorting the blocks themselves.
The artisans from Gospel House in Madampe, Southern Sri Lanka who made this train are renowned as skilled crafts people. Gospel House seeks to provide employment opportunities for disadvantaged young people, often with no educational qualifications. And skills training for continuing development enables many to move on to other jobs.
Gospel House stresses the importance of sustainability and respecting local culture. It supports many small craft groups and through its work, many women have been trained and empowered. In addition tsunami-relief funds have enabled the establishment of a number of new micro-enterprises, which Gospel House has helped to resource.
