This colourful, fair trade, recycled newspaper mat is practical as well as eco-friendly. Newspaper is a poor conductor of heat and the mat is also sealed with starch resin to make it water resistant.
The Women’s Multi-Purpose Co-operative based in Bagulo City in the Philippines make the mats. The co-operative was set up to create jobs for those who came to the city hopeful of finding work in the copper and gold mines. And because of its success more artisans were eventually needed so men have become involved too.
Some members of the co-operative work from home, which means they don’t have to pay for childcare. Others are based in the workshop which gives a sense of community, decent working conditions plus all the required equipment.
The co-operative pays a fair wage and aids artisans in working together to get government help for further training, buying materials and accessing low interest loans. As well as this part of the income earned helps artisans work towards owning their own land.
Because of the handmade nature of this product colours will vary.
